E-Scooter Safety: Important Information for Parents and Guardians

Today, one of our local schools shared an important reminder with parents and guardians about e-scooter safety.

As many international families may not be aware, e-scooters in Norway are subject to specific rules and responsibilities that may differ from those in many other countries.

Some key points worth knowing:

🛴 E-scooters are classified as motor vehicles in Norway

🛴 E-scooters must have valid liability insurance

🛴 The minimum age to ride an e-scooter is 12 years

🛴 Children under 15 years of age are required to wear a helmet

🛴 Only one person may ride an e-scooter at a time

🛴 Maximum speed is 20 km/h

🛴 Maximum speed when passing pedestrians on a sidewalk is 6 km/h

🛴 Alcohol limit: 0.2‰ (0.02% BAC)

🛴 Modifying an e-scooter to increase its speed is illegal and can have serious consequences

For parents and guardians, it is also important to understand that responsibility for ensuring the e-scooter is properly insured rests with the owner or the parents of a minor rider.

For families relocating to Norway, these are exactly the kinds of everyday rules that can easily be overlooked, yet they play an important role in keeping children safe and avoiding unnecessary problems.

With the summer holidays approaching and children spending more time outdoors, this is a timely opportunity to familiarise yourself with the rules and have a conversation with your children about safe and responsible e-scooter use.

What parents/guardians can do:

✅ Agree on clear e-scooter safety rules with your child

✅ Work together with the parents of your child’s friends to establish common expectations and reduce peer pressure

✅ Ensure the e-scooter has valid liability insurance
