Information for UK nationals and their family members.

The UK has left the EU. As of 1 January 2021, UK nationals are no longer EU citizens, and the UK is no longer a member of the European Economic Area (EEA). UK nationals in Norway are now defined as third-country nationals.

The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) provides information about Brexit for UK nationals, including on entry requirements, work and residence permits, citizenship and family immigration.

More information about Norway and Brexit can be found on the Norwegian Government website (Norwegian only).

The UK Government also publishes information for UK nationals living in Norway on its website.

UK nationals coming to Norway post-Brexit

UK nationals and their family members who come to Norway to live, work or study are now treated according to the immigration rules that apply to non-EEA citizens. This means that UK nationals wishing to work in Norway will need to apply for a residence permit.

The same applies to UK service providers who come to Norway to work for limited periods of time.

For more information on immigration, residency, visas and citizenship, see the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration.
